Job DescriptionJob is a PART TIME position involving 2 days per week in class at Wake Technical Community College and 3 days per week as a paid intern at the Gregory Poole Shop.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONThe primary function of the apprentice technician is to learn through classes and hands on training how to perform routine mechanical repairs on equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Learn and use safety practices and PPE for shop operations.
- Learn and complete service documentation: time entry, service reports, part order forms, returns, core tags and warranty tags.
- Use Caterpillar information systems for diagnostics, troubleshooting, assembly/disassembly, and ordering parts.
- Apply logical troubleshooting procedures using Cat network or external sources, including computer diagnostics and wiring schematics.
- Use hand and power tools to remove, install, replace, rebuild, repair, and test components.
- Perform routine repairs on construction equipment.
- Use hand and power tools to disassemble, reassemble parts or equipment, drain fluids into tubs, clean parts with rags, cleaners, and power washer.
- Climb onto, under, or into equipment and use tools to disassemble/reassemble.
- Assist GPEC technicians with larger equipment repairs.
Must have a high school education or GED.
Work ExperienceMust be mechanically inclined with good basic knowledge obtained through schooling or work experience.
PhysicalMust be able to stoop, kneel, bend and climb beside, onto, and underneath equipment daily, to diagnose and repair. Must be able to lift and position parts up to 112 pounds and use a mechanical hoist for heavier parts. Must be able to see effectively to perform repairs and research manuals.
OtherMust write repair activities on customer work orders and possess cognitive reasoning and problem solving skills to apply knowledge, written information, and verbal instructions in repairing or servicing unusual or unknown technical equipment problems. Should have exposure to PC-based equipment and parts information. Capable of learning and understanding technical information, service manuals, and reports.
