Managerial Structure
The Building Substitute reports directly to the Principal or Assistant Principal.
Position Summary
The Building Substitute plays a vital role in ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining a positive, safe, and structured school environment. This individual provides classroom coverage across grade levels and content areas, implements lesson plans provided by teachers, supports students academically and behaviorally, and assists with school wide operations as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction
- Provide classroom instruction in the absence of the regular teacher using provided lesson plans.
- Maintain a safe, engaging, and productive learning environment.
- Build positive relationships with students while reinforcing school wide expectations.
- Monitor student progress and communicate important information to the classroom teacher following each assignment.
Student Support
- Support students individually and in small groups as assigned.
- Assist with classroom management and implementation of behavior expectations.
- Foster an inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued and supported.
School Operations
- Provide coverage across classrooms, grade levels, and subject areas as assigned.
- Supervise students during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned duties.
- Support school wide events, testing, field trips, and other operational needs.
- Assist teachers and administrators with additional responsibilities that contribute to a successful school day.
Professional Responsibilities
- Implement Steel City Academy's culture and behavior expectations consistently.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development as assigned.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and flexibility in all interactions.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the school's mission and daily operations.
Time
- Balanced Calendar:
Steel City believes in creating a balanced calendar that prevents burnout for both our staff and students. This results in longer Fall, Spring and Winter Breaks as well as the famous Steel City Sprinkle Weekends- intentionally placed three-four day weekends throughout the school year. - Paid Time Off:
All Steel City, full time salaried employees accrue paid time off throughout the year in the following categories. - Personal:
All employees earn and accrue three personal days per year. - Sick:
All employees earn and accrue two sick days per year. - Vacation:
Calendar year employees can earn up to fifteen additional vacation days annually. - Jury Duty:
Steel City employees summoned for jury duty, or subpoenaed to testify as a witness, will be granted the necessary time off upon furnishing proof of such written notice to serve. Absences for jury or witness duty are not deducted from any leave allowance. Full-time employees will be paid their regular salary up to ten (10) business days of jury duty. - FMLA:
Steel City Academy will provide Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave to its eligible employees. - Holiday:
