Job Summary
Requirements and duties include the following:
- Operate all types of equipment; skilled in driving in all terrain, routes, and environmental conditions.
- Safely operate a tractor/trailer in compliance with company, federal, state, and local laws and with FMCSA regulations.
- Adhere to all FMCSA requirements for holders of a Commercial Driver’s License.
- Maintain required records in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Comply with safe and legal transportation of hazardous materials.
- Ensure the security of equipment and cargo.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the tractor and trailer.
- Check gauges, visual indicators, seals, and locks; inspect vehicle before and during trips; report maintenance problems to Fleet Services or supervision; verify unit numbers versus paperwork and report discrepancies.
- Use in‑cab technology, including electronic logs and related items.
- Drive according to schedules and work dock as needed.
- Run over‑the‑road as directed by Business needs.
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers and the general public.
- Assist with local pick‑up & delivery routes, hub/regional runs, dock work (loading/unloading freight), and customer‑site loading/unloading freight.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform any other duties assigned as required by operational, safety, or other needs.
- High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 21 years of age required per FMCSA regulations; at least 1 year of driving experience.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Reside within 75 miles of the domiciled Service Center and/or work assignment.
- Hazardous Materials, Tanker, and Doubles endorsements required (LCV requirements may apply).
- Ability to drive a tractor‑trailer for a period conforming to FMCSA requirements.
- Stable employment history preferred.
- Ability to operate a forklift (minimum 7,500 lb vehicle).
- Ability to push or pull a loaded pallet jack or hand truck with a minimum load of 70 lbs.
- Physical abilities: standing, lifting, twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, etc.
- Capability to drop/hook and couple trailers; require cranking the landing gear, pulling the 5‑th wheel pin (~65 lbs of pressure), and maneuvering a trailer dolly.
- Provide an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Familiar with state motor‑vehicle laws and FMCSA rules and regulations.
- Pass the FMCSA required medical exam.
- Pass a road test.
- Meet FMCSA requirements to speak and read English.
- Lifting capability of approximately 70 lbs. or more if required by essential functions of the job.
- Ability to drive all routes and terrain types (mountains, steep roads, curvy highways, desert areas, bridges, tunnels, etc.).
- Ability to drive in a wide range of environmental conditions (rain, wind, snow, freezing temperatures, hot weather, etc.).
- Operate all safety and operational functions of equipment (chain tires, drive manual or automatic transmission vehicles, etc.).
- Comply with all company policies, rules, procedures, and Code of Conduct.
- Interact well with others.
- Work independently or in a team setting.
- Work under tight time constraints in a high‑volume environment with multiple priorities.
- Respond well to questions; read, interpret, and comply with written information and documents such as safety rules, operations/procedure manuals, and maintenance instructions with high comprehension and concentration.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug screen, random drug and/or alcohol tests, and be subject to a criminal history background check.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move a minimum of 70 lbs. While performing the duties, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms;
lift, twist, turn; and may climb. The employee may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; sit and climb or balance.
The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee may be required to work in high or precarious places, with hazardous materials, and in various weather conditions. The noise level ranges from quiet to loud as required by the essential functions of the job.
