The Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, NC is committed to inspiring curiosity and understanding of science and the natural world through exceptional educational programs, exhibits, and research.

Under general supervision by Head of Living Collections, the Explorer’s Outpost Specialist will facilitate informal educational opportunities in the Explorer’s Outpost. The Explorer’s Outpost is an educational exploration space that allows visitors to learn about nature through hands‑on activities. This position requires a high level of visitor engagement, creativity, and environmental education.

• Facilitate themed educational activities for visitors
• Create engaging and educational activities for themed months
• Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of the room
• Engage with visitors in a friendly and thoughtful manner
• Perform opening and closing tasks for the room
• Deliver programming such as story times or experiments to visitors
• Lead gemstone mining programming in summer months
• Participate in special events and programs
• Assist with other programming as needed

Skills:

• Ability to design and deliver hands-on educational activities
• Ability to learn new information through research
• Ability to receive, understand, and carry out verbal and written instruction, direction, and assignments
• Ability to work without direct supervision
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public and comfortable with public speaking
• Ability to present themed programs to school groups and guests of varying ages and abilities
• Ability to manage large groups of children

Education/

Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent. Applicants must be 18 years or older.
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Biology, Environmental Education, or related field preferred, but not necessary.
• At least one year of experience working with children in a professional setting is preferred.

• Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift.
• Applicants are required to have the ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and extend oneself etc., as required for performing assigned tasks.
• Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 30 pounds without assistance.
