Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant
The employee provides support to students who have health, behavioral, or instructional needs to meet Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and have success in the general curriculum. Common competencies include regular attendance, punctuality, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, following school policies, maintaining positive rapport with students and employees, excellent computer skills, record-keeping abilities, strong communication skills, impeccable ethical behaviors, behavior management techniques, confidentiality, serving as a positive role model, supporting the school and its programs, using time wisely, participating in professional learning, accepting and acknowledging diversity, understanding role differences, understanding student development, providing a positive atmosphere, operating office equipment, completing tasks on time, and accepting other duties as assigned.
Job specific duties may include behavior support, client-specific care, pre-kindergarten classes, visually impaired classes, job coaching, and bus driving. The employee will participate in staff development and training, prepare materials, operate office equipment, communicate effectively, develop positive relationships, assist teachers, perform specific student behavior-related duties, work individually, be an active participant in the teaching process, model instruction modification, implement strategies for positive behavior support, collect data, report data, and perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include understanding child development, organizing assignments, using sound judgment, maintaining confidentiality, general knowledge of classroom activities, routines, rules, emergency procedures, adapting instruction, organization and administration principles, curriculum knowledge, monitoring student safety, motivating students, maintaining a clean environment, performing clerical duties, maintaining order, operating office machines, maintaining records, understanding and following instructions, and establishing effective working relationships.
Education and experience requirements include a high school diploma, minimum of 48 semester hours or an associate's degree, and willingness to obtain a CDL if required. This position reports to the school principal and is classified as non-exempt.
