Job Title

Substation Project Manager / Senior Substation Engineer

About the Role

This position offers the opportunity to manage one or more project teams consisting of engineers, designers, estimators, controls, and scheduling professionals involved in the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing high‑voltage substations.

You will work on a broad range of assignments, including:

  • Individual projects
  • Large projects and major programs
  • Large‑scale engineering‑only
  • Engineering‑Procure‑Construction (EPC) projects
Key Responsibilities
  • Direct the team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of electrical engineering work.
  • Coordinate and manage work performed by other stakeholders on the project, including civil, structural, and transmission line disciplines.
  • Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed with high quality, on time, and within budget.
  • Identify and track potential out‑of‑scope work, develop and provide scope changes, and coordinate with the client for approval.
  • Coordinate systems design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and technical staff across multiple office locations.
  • Prepare reports and technical studies that present information clearly and concisely, meeting both client requirements and internal standards.
  • Perform reviews of work performed by others, including calculations, drawings, reports, and specifications (e.g., material, construction, and procurement).
  • Communicate directly with clients, providing both project support and overall account support.
  • Support the company in business development opportunities with existing and potential clients.
  • Provide independent reviews of work performed by others, including scopes of work, proposals, procurement specifications, and contract documents.
  • Develop and mentor team members in technical and professional skills.
Work Arrangement
  • This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with a typical expectation of three days per week in the office and two days per week working remotely.
  • A competitive relocation package is available for candidates joining from outside the local area.
Qualifications
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, preferably from an ABET‑accredited engineering program.
  • Specific experience in project management of utility transmission, substation, or energy projects.
  • Knowledge of engineering and electrical standards, including:
    • NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEC, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • 10 or more years of experience in the design engineering and/or management of high‑voltage utility‑type projects, including:
    • Preparation, oversight, or management of scopes of work,
    • Development of conceptual layouts,
    • Determination of design basis,
    • Selection of equipment and materials, and
    • Preparation and assembly of calculations and specifications.
  • Experience with multiple contract arrangements, such as EPC, owner's engineering, traditional design‑bid‑build, and joint ventures (preferred).
  • Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a support, engineering, or management role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in writing proposals and technical reports.
  • Experience in cost allocation and control, estimating, proposal preparation, and risk assessment programs and techniques.
Valued (But Not Required) Skills and Experience
  • An advanced management or business degree, or a relevant management/business certification.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Construction and start‑up experience (preferred).
  • Commissioning experience (preferred).
