Overview

The Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) serves as a trusted scientific expert representing Bayer in the medical community through education on scientific data related to Bayer products across the product lifecycle. The MSL establishes proactive long-term scientific and strategic relationships with key healthcare providers, major medical associations, and academic centers of excellence to ensure access to relevant scientific information and timely medical communications.

The MSL provides technical and scientific field support to healthcare providers to ensure safe and effective use of Bayer products, including timely adverse event reporting and responses to unsolicited requests for detailed product and disease-state information. The MSL develops a complete understanding of national, regional, and local experts and stakeholders in specific therapeutic areas, collaborating with internal partners and external contacts to address scientific and educational needs.

This role covers a specific region and Area Business Unit.

Responsibilities Scientific Expertise
  • Complete core training curriculum and basic MSL and Therapeutic Area (TA) Certification
  • Demonstrate accountability to continuous learning and growth (Franchise data, MSL role, Soft Skills, Personal Development); complete recertification where applicable
  • Maintain professional licensure with CEU documentation where applicable
  • Develop depth of knowledge within the therapeutic area that exceeds peers and/or Medical Affairs experience in multiple therapeutic areas
  • Coordinate and lead TA updates, team discussions, and training initiatives (e.g., journal clubs)
  • Attend and report on local, regional, and national medical conferences and other valuable meetings
  • Coordinate team coverage of major regional or national meetings, including program evaluation, attendance, and high-quality meeting reports
  • Identify educational gaps and provide recommendations for educational resources, content, or initiative development
External HCP and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Establish robust long-term relationships with thought leaders and key stakeholders through education on up-to-date scientific information aligned with US, Global, and Area Business Unit strategies
  • Engage proactively with TLs, HCPs, research sites, associations, societies, and other stakeholders; identify future stakeholders and emerging thought leader groups in line with local healthcare systems
  • Leverage knowledge of US and Global strategies to develop and implement local Area Business Unit strategy
  • Drive medical strategy by translating the local medical plan into implementable TL and stakeholder engagement strategies with cross-functional teams
  • Approach accounts strategically using key metrics to align to territory plan and medical objectives
  • Support speaker training and medical evaluation of scientific merit; advisory board or Bayer program coordination during meetings
  • Coordinate TL engagement with Franchise Medical Affairs team and internal stakeholders
Education
  • Deliver educational presentations to external audiences and proactively identify educational opportunities within the assigned Area Business Unit
  • Provide timely, accurate, specific, and balanced responses to Medical Inquiries in collaboration with Medical Communications
  • Adhere to SOPs and FDA guidance for distribution of scientific information
  • Adhere to SOPs and compliance guidelines for all external contacts
  • Prepare and present data to internal audiences including MA and Commercial partners
Research
  • Support research projects aligned with medical and brand strategy, including investigator-initiated research and research site identification
  • Support Bayer-sponsored clinical trials by engaging with stakeholders, data collection, feasibility and initiation visits, and study support as appropriate
