SHIIP Medicare Counselor Volunteer

Overview

A SHIIP Medicare counselor gathers confidential information about the client, shares resource information both virtual (phone/computer) and/or face-to-face, offering unbiased and accurate information about Medicare plans/benefits to those seeking assistance with enrollment or information on health care plans.

• Provide counseling and information about Medicare options to individuals seeking enrollment or information on health care plans.
• Share resource information and guidance in a respectful, unbiased manner.
• Engage with clients through virtual or in-person meetings as appropriate.

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Must obtain and retain SHIIP certification and participate in continuing education programs from the Department of Insurance/NC-SHIIP program.
• Must possess a caring and sensitive attitude toward others.
• Must possess basic computer skills, including copier equipment for printing, and navigation within Medicare.gov as well as other websites for counseling, communication, and possibly enrollment in health plans.
• Must NOT be an active licensed insurance agent nor have an immediate family member who is an active insurance agent.
• Volunteer must be able to lift 5-10 lbs to help with setup for health/volunteer fairs and able to climb stairs, if necessary, and perform a negligible amount of force repeatedly to move objects. The work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Visual and auditory capabilities are required for tasks such as depth and color perception, preparing and analyzing data, and clear communication.

The volunteer is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
