Description of WorkResponsible for providing basic learning and leisure opportunities to patients at Broughton Hospital on an individual or group basis. The role involves executing basic learning modules, unit activities, and leisure activities such as exercise, crafts, daily living, hygiene skills, and work. Supports the treatment team in delivering therapeutic activities and documents patient attendance in medical records.
Individualizes treatment opportunities to restore patient potential and maintain a therapeutic environment. Performs demonstration duties, assists with movement of patient supplies, supports patient mobility, and maintains statistical reports of work hours and patient contact. Attends staff meetings and scheduled training sessions as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)- Ability to learn and implement safety measures
- Ability to recognize patient needs and communicate accurately
- Ability to follow hospital, unit, and nursing policies and procedures
- Ability to work with difficult patients while maintaining safety
- At least 3+ years of experience working in a psychiatric setting
- Experience documenting information in client records or charts
Selected applicants must pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, complete BLS/CPR training, and complete Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.
This position is designated as mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
Work ScheduleMonday to Friday, 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm with alternating weekends and holidays. Flexibility is required to meet facility needs.
Eligibility for Sign‑On BonusA sign‑on bonus of $2,000 may be offered to successful applicants contingent on budget approval. Eligibility requires a newly hired permanent full-time or part‑time employee to work 30–40 hours per week. Employees who have held a position in North Carolina state government (including the judicial system) or the University of North Carolina system within the past 12 months, previously received a sign‑on bonus from any state agency, or have had a DHHS contract placement or recruitment fee paid are ineligible.

Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals under the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities. It serves the western 37 counties of North Carolina and provides mental health care and support for individuals with psychiatric conditions.
