About Us

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. Description of Work

The primary purpose of the Professional Nurse working for the Highway Patrol is to provide nursing care to members in need. The Nurse assists with medical evaluations by providing blood draws for lab work, taking blood pressures, eye examinations for sight testing, hearing testing, blood sugar, height, weight, EKG’s, and any other function to provide medical needs under the direction of the Doctor(s).

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care in an occupational health setting.
  • Apply current knowledge of occupational nursing, nursing procedures, emergency care, preventive care, and infection prevention and control.
  • Utilize the nursing process—including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—with limited supervision and appropriate clinical judgment.
  • Administer medications accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with established protocols and scope of practice.
  • Provide patient education and promote preventive health practices.
  • Demonstrate a professional, caring, and patient-centered approach when interacting with patients, clients, and families.
  • Perform clinical procedures and services, including:
  • Starting and monitoring intravenous fluids.
  • Performing EKGs.
  • Obtaining vital signs and blood glucose levels.
  • Performing basic phlebotomy.
  • Assisting physicians with medical evaluations and treatments.
  • Providing emergency care and other nursing services within scope of practice.
  • Coordinate and supervise daily clinical routines for physical examinations, pre-hire examinations, and fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • Review patient medical histories, perform required clinical procedures, and coordinate with administrative staff to ensure medical records are complete, accurate, and properly filed.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and pertinent documentation in patient medical records.

    Assist physicians with the investigation, evaluation, and implementation of new clinical practices and procedures.
  • Collect and analyze medical data to monitor clinical trends and support continuous quality and practice improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention, safety, and clinical standards.
  • Manage day-to-day medical office operations in the absence of a physician, ensuring continuity of patient care and clinical services.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, administrative staff, and other healthcare team members to support efficient and high-quality patient care.
Management Prefers

Maintain current, comprehensive knowledge of occupational nursing, nursing procedures, emergency care, preventive medicine, and infection prevention & control.
