Position: WEEKEND OPERATIONS & SECURITY

The position is responsible for providing a safe environment for Museum employees, visitors, and museum exhibitions and collections. This position is customer service oriented and requires interaction with the public to enhance the visitor experience and to provide information regarding the exhibitions on display. Candidate must work well with other museum staff to provide the highest level of security required for standard Museum practice and to ensure a safe and attractive facility for the public and the staff.

Incumbent will work weekends, holidays, and nights, as needed. This position reports directly to the Maintenance and Security Manager.

  • Safeguards staff, visitors, exhibits, equipment, buildings, and grounds by maintaining a secure environment throughout museum facilities.

  • Provides daily closing procedures and security checks of all museum buildings and grounds.

  • Provides crowd control, traffic control, and parking management for museum programs and special events.

  • Interacts with visitors by answering general questions regarding the museum, exhibitions, programs, activities, and providing customer service.

  • Performs routine safety and security inspections of all monitored museum areas, including exhibit spaces, gem cases, dioramas, Bark Hut, Cave, and other collections.

  • Completes accurate incident, accident, and security reports and submits documentation to appropriate personnel as required. 5%
  • Performs custodial duties to maintain clean, safe, and sanitary conditions in public areas, including restrooms, lobby, hallways, exhibit spaces, buildings, and grounds. Assists with the setup and breakdown of equipment for regular programs and special events as needed.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, tools and equipment needed to be effective in repairs and upkeep of the buildings and related equipment. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in conjunction with OSHA safety and health standards related to the job. Ability to prepare in writing detailed reports or plans as required. ADD – knowledge about cleaning practices

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or community college. Experience in customer service, public safety, security, or building maintenance is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent will be required to walk the museum building and grounds on a regular basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid appropriate driver’s license. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

  • A. Climbing:
    Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.

    B. Balancing:
    Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or couching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

    C. Stooping:
    Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

    D. Kneeling:
    Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

    E. Crouching:
    Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

    F. Reaching:
    Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

    G. Standing:
    Particularly for sustained periods of time.

    H. Walking:
    Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

    I. Pushing:
    Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

    J. Pulling:
    Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
