Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Technician
Fleet Services maintains county vehicles and small equipment by performing both routine and preventative maintenance on a scheduled service interval. In addition, computerized records are maintained for parts, labor, and fuel usage for the accurate tracking of cost analysis required for operations and equipment replacement.
Tech A - An hourly salary range of $20.43 to $23.75 is anticipated for this position.
Tech B - An hourly salary range of $22.45 to $26.11 is anticipated for this position.
The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
- Performs complex mechanical repair work including engine components, suspension, driveline, steering, drivetrain, and braking systems. Includes teardown and assembly of major components.
- Utilizes diagnostic software, scan tools, and mechanical testing to identify vehicle problems. Interprets diagnostic codes, conducts root-cause analysis, and advises on corrective action.
- Performs scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, filters, tire services, inspections, and lubrication on light- and medium-duty vehicles. Often includes completion of state safety inspections when applicable.
- Diagnoses and repairs electrical issues, sensor faults, module failures, lighting systems, wiring issues, and charging systems. May include integration of in-vehicle technology.
- Records labor, parts usage, diagnostics findings, and repair notes in the fleet management system.
- Participates in shop maintenance, assists with mentoring lower-level technicians, attends training, and supports special projects as needed.
- Troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and emissions issues beyond basic services; replacing components such as alternators, sensors, control modules, steering/suspension parts, fuel system components, etc.
- Performing scheduled maintenance on light and medium-duty vehicles.
- Entering notes into fleet software, documenting diagnostic paths, updating labor hours and maintenance logs, communicating with parts team to source materials.
- Assisting Technician A staff with escalation of work, sharing industry knowledge, participating in internal training sessions and safety briefings.
- Maintaining assigned work spaces, tools, lifts, and equipment; supporting shop organization and inventory control.
- High School Diploma or GED, Associate's Degree preferred.
- 4 years experience as Automotive Mechanic/ Technician.
- High School Diploma or GED, Associate's Degree preferred.
- Two years' experience as Automotive Mechanic/ Technician.
Require NC Auto Emission Inspector or must obtain within 6 months and 3 ASE Certifications or must obtain within 12 months.
Techs A & B require Certified/Accredited College Training Program.
Tech B requires 2 years’ experience and 5 ASE Certifications.
All Tech Levels must have own hand tools and possess a valid NC driver’s license.
The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
