Job SummaryPerforms highly complex work in the production and processing of various products in the Texas Correctional Industry department. Work involves monitoring the work of inmates to ensure efficient operations. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Functions- Monitors inmates in the performance of assigned tasks; develops production standards; makes recommendations on production procedure changes; monitors and reviews production to ensure quality and quantity control of finished products; and monitors machinery and equipment maintenance.
- Ensures on‑job training and safety training are conducted for inmate workers in methods and equipment used.
- Prepares reports of operations and related documents.
- Maintains security of tools, machinery, and equipment; responds to emergency situations; performs various correctional and custodial support functions; and assists in maintaining security of assigned inmates.
- Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
A. Education, Experience, and Training
- Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
- One year full‑time, wage‑earning experience in garment manufacturing.
- Two years full‑time, wage‑earning experience in any production or manufacturing operation. Thirty semester hours from a college or university accredited by CHEA or USDE may be substituted for each year of experience on a year‑for‑year basis for a maximum substitution of two years.
- Correctional custody or law enforcement experience preferred.
- Knowledge of quality control standards to maintain satisfactory levels of production.
- Knowledge of production and workflow procedures.
- Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
- Knowledge of garment manufacturing preferred.
- Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
- Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
- Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
- Skill to train and supervise the work of inmates.
- Skill in the use of machinery and equipment in the assigned area preferred.
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 15‑44 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle and motor equipment.
- Conditions include working inside, around machines with moving parts, radiant and electrical energy, closely with others, alone, protracted or irregular hours, varying noise, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, oils, solvents, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
- Equipment used includes computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, garment manufacturing machines and equipment, hand tools, forklift, pallet jack, telephone, dolly, automobile.
