Overview

As a Materiel Management Technician, you ensure that all supplies and services necessary for Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations are available when and where required. You may handle items such as food, fuel, heavy machinery, spare parts, stationery and clothing.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the purchasing, warehousing, shipping, receiving, stock control and disposal of obsolete stock and equipment
  • Receive, handle and prepare items for shipment
  • Operate military vehicles up to 10 tons and materials-handling equipment such as forklifts
  • Process invoices and prepare shipping documents
  • Order material from internal and external sources and purchase supplies
  • Deliver supplies and provide services to operational units
  • Perform recordkeeping, stocktaking and inventory control
  • Maintain accounting and financial records
  • Process and coordinate repair and disposal functions
Work environment

Materiel Management Technicians may work in Canada or be deployed abroad, in support of Royal Canadian Navy, Army or Royal Canadian Air Force operations. They may serve on ships, stand duty watches, and perform ship’s husbandry duties. Army personnel participate in operations and training with combat teams, including driving and maintaining vehicles. Those with the Royal Canadian Air Force may be deployed to remote locations on short notice.

Regular Force: after completing required training, you will be assigned to your first base. Postings may require relocation. Primary Reserve: you will join a specific Reserve unit and typically work part-time, with potential for full-time opportunities.

No previous work experience or career-related skills are required. CAF recruiters can help determine if your interests and attributes match this occupation. The minimum education required is the completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 (Quebec). Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

The first stage is Basic Military Qualification (Basic Training) at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruitment School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This training builds core skills common to all trades and maintains CAF physical fitness standards. Materiel Management Technicians attend the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario. Training takes about 70 days at the apprentice level and covers:

  • Action customer inquiries
  • Requesting, receiving, issuing and warehousing material
  • Processing material for repair and disposal
  • Use of material handling aids
  • Processing issues and receipts
  • Preservation and packaging of material
  • Supply-related administrative and support functions
  • Processing clothing, footwear for issues, returns or exchanges

Opportunities exist to develop specialized skills through formal courses and on‑the‑job training, including:

Part-time options

This position is available for part-time employment with the Primary Reserve at certain locations across Canada. Reserve Force members usually serve part-time at a local unit, with training paid. Full relocations are not typically required, though volunteering for deployment is possible.

Reserve Force members may serve with the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army or Royal Canadian Air Force, ensuring supplies are available for training and operations. Training for Materiel Management Technicians takes about 70 days at the Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics in Borden, Ontario. Reserve members are often paid at a rate close to Regular Force levels with benefits and pension eligibility.
