Deputy Sheriff

Under the direction of the Chief Deputy, the Deputy Sheriff is responsible for enforcing all federal, state and local laws, statutes, and ordinances within the County to serve and protect citizens of the County and to promote public safety. Duties of the Deputy Sheriff include such major responsibilities as patrolling assigned portions of the County; enforcing laws and regulations and issuing traffic citations;

serving civil process papers; responding to civil or criminal complaints, disturbances or emergency assistance; assisting in the conduct of various criminal and civil investigations; locating and executing arrest/search warrants; transporting persons per court orders; providing court security; and providing assistance and response to natural disasters, homeland security or hazardous chemical/materials spills.

• Patrols areas of the County enforcing traffic laws, providing security and enforcement of traffic laws.

• Investigates and responds to calls, civil and criminal complaints, disturbances, or requests for emergency assistance.

• Serves and executes civil process papers, precepts and orders in accordance with state and federal law. Pursues and executes arrest warrants including probation violators and other persons wanted by the court. Serves warrants in accordance with department policies, state, and federal mandates and regulations.
• Transports mentally ill and intoxicated persons to state and private facilities pursuant to orders of the court.
• Provides court security during criminal and civil trials. Transports prisoners to and from court and/or to other facilities, as required.
• Maintains all department equipment used in the performance of the job and ensures their proper working order.
• Prepares incident and investigative reports and complaints. Appears in court to certify regarding law enforcement procedures, actions and incidents.
• Incumbents of this position are relied upon for providing credible, accurate, and effective testimony in court and elsewhere. It is of utmost importance that persons in this position conduct themselves in a manner that does not cause concern regarding their ability to be able to provide credible, accurate, and effective testimony.
• Employees must consistently report to work as scheduled and maintain regular attendance
• Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.

Two-Year AA Degree in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, criminology, behavior/social science, or related field.is required.

Valid Minnesota Peace Officer License is required. No previous law enforcement experience beyond licensure requirement.

Valid Minnesota Driver's License is required

Other training and certifications may required by Department after hire.
