Senior Quality Technician
The Senior Quality Technician leads complex inspection and testing activities to ensure products meet stringent quality and customer requirements within a CNC manufacturing environment. This role operates advanced test and measurement equipment, supports ISO 9001 compliance, and serves as a key resource for quality systems, inspection techniques, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Senior Quality Technician also mentors other quality and production team members, supports audits, and plays a critical role in maintaining high standards of precision and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Operate complex equipment and tools to test products and verify conformance to specifications.
- Communicate quality requirements and requests across Sales, Engineering, Assembly, Machining, Shipping, Maintenance, and other departments to ensure alignment on standards and expectations.
- Work closely with production teams to meet product standards, quality objectives, and productivity goals.
- Participate in the calibration system, document out-of-tolerance conditions, and ensure timely corrective actions.
- Support and administer the plant non-conforming material process, including documentation and follow-up.
- Inspect and verify critical components, first articles, and finished assemblies, ensuring all required documentation is complete and accurate.
- Ensure plant adherence to quality policies, procedures, and ISO 9001 requirements.
- Maintain quality records in accordance with ISO 9001 standards and internal procedures.
- Serve as the plant resource for test and measurement devices, inspection techniques, and best practices.
- Perform receiving inspections and issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) when required.
- Handle duties that require substantial variety, judgment, and technical complexity in a manufacturing quality setting.
- Serve as a resource to others in resolving quality-related issues and problems across the plant.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to Quality Technicians and production personnel on quality standards, inspection methods, GD&T, and problem-solving techniques.
- Employ Continuous System Improvement (CSI) tools and techniques to identify and recommend improvements to inspection and production processes.
- Ensure rejected materials are properly documented and accounted for within the inventory management system.
- Make material accept/reject decisions based on inspection results and quality standards.
- Disqualify test and measurement devices when appropriate and initiate necessary actions for repair or recalibration.
- Review test equipment certifications and verify their suitability for specific applications and tolerances.
- Support internal and external quality audits and assist in implementing corrective actions when necessary.
- Utilize ERP systems and coordinate with internal stakeholders to manage reports, deadlines, and quality documentation.
- Demonstrate leadership when handling internal reports, interacting with executives and customers, and driving resolution of quality concerns.
- Interpret GD&T drawings and determine appropriate methods to measure, cut, and adjust dimensions within tight tolerances.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing quality experience, preferably as a Quality Technician or in a similar role.
- Direct experience working in a CNC manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 standards and practical on-the-job experience implementing and supporting ISO 9001 requirements.
- Proficiency in inspection and quality inspection methods, including final inspection of components and assemblies.
- Hands-on experience with precision measurement equipment such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and other hand inspection tools.
- Experience operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), including familiarity with Mitutoyo CMM equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and production specifications, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Demonstrated ability to work with very tight tolerances, including tolerances in the range of thousandths of an inch.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for reporting and documentation.
- Experience utilizing quality auditing tools, methodologies, and root-cause problem-solving techniques.
- Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of Continuous System Improvement (CSI) tools and techniques.
- Strong planning, organizational, and time-management skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, including mentoring, coaching, and training employees in quality standards and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based manufacturing environment and collaborate across departments.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
