Overview

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is looking for a News Editor / Team Leader. About Eurovision News Exchange (EVN):
Eurovision News is a premier distributor of quality news content, a provider of news-related broadcast services and an advocate for public service journalism. Its primary goal is to serve the needs of the EBU members according to its editorial standards and principles. The Eurovision News Exchange (EVN) offers access on a daily basis to its members, sublicensees and other partners to over 140 live and edited news items on the major news stories of the day.

In operation since 1961, the EVN is the biggest exchange of its kind. It is built on a network of EBU Members, sublicensees and media partners in over 50 countries and is founded on principles of editorial integrity, solidarity and sharing of knowledge and best practices. Live and edited news content offered by our members and partners is delivered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from our headquarters in Geneva and our bureaux in Washington, New York, Rome and Moscow.

Our Live content is delivered via our three main Live channels, EBU 1, 2 and 3, and our edited material is delivered by file.

Principal Responsibilities

This role combines senior editorial responsibility with people-management duties.

As a News Editor, You Will
  • Take editorial decisions on live and edited content published on the News Exchange
  • Prioritise stories and ensure the timely delivery of accurate, impartial and relevant news content to Members
  • Lead the editorial agenda on shift and guide News Producers through complex and fast-moving news situations
  • Commission and request content based on the global news agenda and Members’ needs
  • Plan upcoming news events and contribute to news outlooks and internal communication
  • Maintain close editorial relationships with Members and act as a Member Engagement Representative
  • Contribute actively to the strategic development of the News Exchange and its editorial offering
As a Team Leader, You Will Additionally
  • Line-manage News Producers (staff and on-call), including performance management, development and wellbeing
  • Organise scheduling, approve leave and ensure adequate staffing across shifts
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and skills development of team members
  • Act as deputy to the Head of Eurovision News Exchange
  • Work closely with other Editors and Team Leaders to ensure consistency, collaboration and operational excellence
Your Skills And Experience
  • Strong editorial judgement with a deep understanding of European and global news
  • Proven experience as a News Editor in an international newsroom environment
  • Ability to make sound editorial decisions under pressure and with limited information
  • Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in people management and team leadership (required for Team Leader level)
  • Solid understanding of public service media values, journalistic ethics and media law, including copyright
  • High organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a 24/7 news operation
  • Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends, and to travel occasionally
Language
  • English: proficient to native level (working language)
  • Other languages (e.g., French or additional EBU languages) are an asset
