Freight Trading Operations Analyst

We are working with a leading global commodities business to appoint a Freight Trading Operations Analyst within its Ocean Transportation function.
This is a junior-level opportunity for someone with strong analytical ability who wants to build deep exposure to freight trading, daily P&L, commercial decision-making and risk across both physical and paper markets.
The role sits close to the freight trading desk, supporting daily P&L reporting, analytical reviews, trader presentations and commercial analysis across FFA, freight and ocean transportation activity. Over time, successful individuals may progress towards trading, risk or broader middle office leadership, depending on performance, aptitude and long-term interests.
The roleYou will support the freight desk with:
- Daily P&L production and reporting
- Analytical review of trading performance
- Reporting and presentations for traders and commercial stakeholders
- Data analysis, modelling and process improvement
- Exposure to FFA, freight, physical shipping and paper markets
- Building a strong understanding of how commercial trading decisions are made
This role is likely to suit someone with 2-5 years’ experience in a trading, commodities, analytics, risk, middle office or quantitative environment.
Freight experience would be valuable, but is not essential. More important is strong analytical capability, intellectual curiosity and the willingness to learn the business properly.
Relevant backgrounds may include:
- Engineering, mathematics, finance, economics or another quantitative discipline
- Experience in analytics, P&L, risk, operations, trading support or commercial analysis
- Strong Excel capability
- Python, VBA or other coding / automation experience
- Exposure to IMOS or freight trading systems would be advantageous
- Interest in commodity markets, freight, physical trading or derivatives
The successful candidate will need to be comfortable spending time mastering the role: understanding daily P&L, learning the freight business, building credibility with traders and developing genuine commercial judgement.
This is not a shortcut into a trading seat. It is an opportunity to build the foundations that can lead to trading, risk or wider commercial progression over time.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are analytical, curious, patient, commercially engaged and motivated by becoming excellent in the role before seeking the next step.
ProcessThe client is looking to move quickly and can accommodate notice periods for the right candidate.
