About the team you are joining

The Assistant Director, Associate General Counsel (AGC) - Advocacy and Industry Regulation (AIR) is a senior legal professional with substantial knowledge, skills, and experience in airline industry regulatory matters. This role provides advice, support, and research to support IATA’s advocacy, government affairs, and industry legal activities. The AGC – AIR has direct managerial responsibility for the AIR stream of the Advocacy, Governance and Regulatory Workstream and for team delivery, and reports to the Director Legal Services (Deputy General Counsel) Regulatory and Governance.

Responsibilities
  • Provides independent advice on substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, including international air law, administrative law, litigation, dispute resolution, economic and technical regulations, and policy relevant to the airline industry.
  • Primary lawyer responsible for providing advice on AIR Advocacy and Industry Regulation matters, including AIR Industry Litigation, AIR Industry Regulation and Policy, and AIR Charges and Regulated Infrastructure.
  • Responds to requests for legal assistance from clients and assignments referred by the Deputy General Counsel or General Counsel.
  • Manages, leads and mentors direct reports and has supervisory responsibility for their work products and assignments to ensure performance aligned with IATA’s obligations and objectives.
  • Member of the leadership team of the Regulatory and Governance Legal Workstream; collaborates with the Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel on management issues relating to the Legal Team.
  • Peer reviews the work of other team members and contributes to the development of team members.
  • Collaborates with other LSCS team members and works with the DGCs and other AGCs to implement improvements across Legal Work streams.
  • Leads client relationships on relevant Workstream portfolio work and develops training and guidance material on various topics.
  • Delivers training to IATA staff and drafts material on legal subjects for dissemination to airline legal members, including case reviews and summaries of legal developments.
  • Delivers presentations to airline members and other external audiences in IATA governance council meetings, taskforces and working groups.
  • Manages, instructs, and approves the budget for external counsel in accordance with LSCS processes; monitors and reviews external counsel performance.
  • Collaborates with LSCS team members and with IATA staff, external counsel and airline members; maintains strong relationships with specialist legal communities relevant to IATA’s work.
Qualifications
  • Advanced University degree in law (LLB, JD, LLM) from an internationally recognized university.
  • Admission to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction (preferably the UK, EU member state, Canada, US, Australia or New Zealand).
  • Fifteen years post-qualification experience in increasingly responsible positions in an organization, government department or law firm.
  • Demonstrated legal management experience with a track record of mentoring specialists to high team performance.
  • Significant legal knowledge and experience; excellent command of English; superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Effective, confident communicator and a team player; strong legal research skills; ownership of tasks; strong supervisory abilities.
  • Demonstrates initiative and commitment to personal development and continued learning.
