The Director of Choral Music provides artistic and administrative leadership for the university’s choral program. This position is responsible for fostering an environment of musical excellence, promoting the growth and visibility of the program, and delivering high-quality instruction to both music majors and non-majors. Primary functions are split equally between teaching and administrative duties.
Essential Functions
Provide creative and administrative leadership for the University’s Choral Program.Teach 6 hours of undergraduate music courses per semesterEstablish and maintain standards that foster musical excellence and inclusivity for students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.Select, prepare, and program musical repertoire appropriate for university ensembles.Conduct rehearsals and direct choral performances on and off campus.Manage the program’s budget to ensure fiscal responsibility.Actively recruit prospective students through outreach activitiesOversee and administer merit-based scholarships for choral students.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
Proven experience in choral conducting, vocal pedagogy with a strong emphasis in African diasporic repertoire.Proficiency in piano to accompany rehearsals and to demonstrate musical concepts.Ability to motivate and inspire students of varying skill levels in a positive and supportive learning environment.Strong organizational and time-management skills.A demonstrated commitment to recruitment and retention efforts.A master’s degree in choral conducting or a related field with university level experience is required.
A minimum of 5 years of successful experience conducting choirs in a university setting is strongly preferred.
Evaluation Criteria
Demonstrate consistent artistic growth and musical excellence as evidenced by high-quality public performances.Effectively manage the program’s budget and logistics, ensuring all administrative responsibilities are met in a timely manner.Maintain enrollment of the choral program ensuring high-quality musicianship, effective student mentoring, as indicated by retention rates and student feedback.#J-18808-Ljbffr
