Job Description

Elwyn seeks a Psychiatrist to diagnose and treat a variety of emotional and psychiatric disorders and co-occurring conditions and assist clients from young adult through geriatric age with mental illness to achieve social, emotional, and personal independence. Diagnosis populations served include chronic mental illness, dual diagnosis, and substance abuse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct peer review /clinical risk management meetings
  • Elicit and record information about patient’s medical and psychiatric histories for the purpose of formulating an accurate diagnosis and providing relevant treatment.
  • Order laboratory tests and procedures as indicated to monitor potential side effects of treatment and/or to monitor compliance.
  • Order assessments or consultations for individuals to assist with diagnostic formulation and/or develop comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Conduct and document, according to FHR’s policies and procedures, a semi-annual AIMS test for each individual prescribed antipsychotic medication.
  • Encourage individuals to have routine medical, gynecological, optical, and dental examinations to ensure general health maintenance. Facilitate coordination of care with each individual’s health care team.
  • Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications according to community standards of care and the FHR P&P. Monitor individual’s response to pharmacological intervention through individual contact, and collaboration with other members of the individual’s treatment team.
  • Discuss risks and benefits and obtain informed consent from individual or appointed guardian prior to initiating pharmacotherapy.
  • Demonstrate ability to integrate general medical concerns into psychiatric care as evidenced by attention to drug‑drug interactions, complications of medical illness, and behavioral effects of somatic illness and treatments.
  • Provide psychoeducation to individuals and, when appropriate, their significant others regarding diagnosis, treatment options and recommendations, and self-care techniques.
  • Conduct and supervise individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and group therapy when clinically and programmatically indicated.
  • Maintain documentation in electronic health record of all individual appointments and telephone contacts in accordance with FHR, CARF, and local Department of Mental Health standards.
  • E‑Prescribe – Utilize e‑prescribe feature in CARe to send prescriptions electronically.
  • Prepare psychiatric assessments and progress notes for inclusion in clinical records according to FHR policy.
  • Attend and participate in treatment planning process and have final approval of treatment plans, as indicated by signature on the plan.
  • Collaborate and consult with nurses, social workers, case managers, and other practitioners involved in individual’s care – both within and outside of the agency.
  • Perform emergency assessments and refer individuals for inpatient treatment when indicated.
  • Coordinate individual care with inpatient practitioner through direct communication with inpatient practitioner.
  • Complete in a timely manner requests to fill out forms made by individuals or outside agencies when indicated such as insurance forms, GPA forms, TDI forms, SSI forms, etc.
