The DNREC Fisheries Section works to enhance and protect Delaware’s fish and aquatic resources in support of recreational and commercial fishing and aquaculture. It provides first-class fishing and boating access to Delaware’s many waterways. This Section conducts fisheries research, resource monitoring, and collection of biological information on marine and freshwater fisheries.

Summary Statement

This position is responsible for conducting research relevant to management of freshwater and diadromous fish species in water bodies throughout Delaware, monitoring and management of American Eel and Horseshoe Crab populations, sampling the commercial Striped Bass harvest, collecting and analyzing biological data (including age structures) for use in determining management actions needed to maintain viable populations; preparing grant packages and writing scientific reports, preparing compliance reports, reviewing permit requests, assisting with fish kill investigations, communicating with stakeholder and partner groups, and representing the state on several Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Technical Committees.

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

  • Six months experience in fish identification and fish sampling
  • Knowledge of preparing and aging fish bony parts
Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.
Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  • Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Two years' experience in technical report writing.
