Position: Intelligent Transportation Systems Technician I ITS Technician I

Overview

The mission of the Division of Transportation Solutions is to provide excellence in transportation by developing, constructing and maintaining the State's infrastructure in a manner that results in a safe, cost‑effective, and efficient multi‑modal transportation network that enhances mobility, commerce, and livability. Transportation Solutions also provides high‑quality support services to other divisions in the department.

Summary Statement

Responsibilities include maintenance work on traffic signals and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices. The candidate will install, modify, test, troubleshoot, and repair traffic control signals, communications, and ITS field devices. Other duties include repair of internal cabinet equipment, essential electrical devices, and ITS equipment. The position involves shipping, ordering, receiving, and inventorying equipment, providing rotational on‑call duties, responding to emergency situations, and reporting to the duty station within 60 minutes.

Candidates must follow applicable safety procedures, use equipment such as bucket trucks, locating equipment, and electrical test equipment, and be physically able to lift materials such as pedestrian signal poles and other traffic equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of intelligent transportation systems equipment.
  • Repair copper‑wired, fiber‑optic, and wireless communication systems related to intelligent transportation systems equipment.
  • Test intelligent transportation systems equipment using detection software and a variety of testing devices such as multimeters, meggars, GPS equipment, and oscilloscopes.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for the purpose of diagnosing intelligent transportation systems equipment.
  • Apply the standards, principles, and practices of the department safety manual, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the National Electrical Code.
  • Respond to emergencies involving intelligent transportation system equipment.
  • Transfer data to and from field unit devices such as traffic signal controllers, piezoelectric axle sensors, and automatic data recorders into a computer database.
  • Detect, locate, and mark out underground utilities.
  • May perform field counts for traffic control and timing.
  • Operate motorized equipment such as an aerial lift device with an extended arm for the purpose of repairing and replacing intelligent transportation systems equipment.
Job Requirements
  • Knowledge of electronics or electrical installation.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked, cancelled, or disqualified).

Applicants must have education, training, and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the above areas, and be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Conditions of Hire

The State of Delaware participates in E‑Verify and will verify your Form I‑9 information. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. A conditional offer requires a satisfactory pre‑employment drug test and a criminal background check. All new hires are required to attend the Statewide New Employee Orientation on their first day.
