Transportation Systems Technician

Description

The mission of the Division of Transportation Solutions is to provide excellence in transportation by developing, constructing and maintaining the State's infrastructure in a manner that results in a safe, cost‑effective, and efficient multi‑modal transportation network that enhances mobility, commerce, and livability. This position focuses on maintenance of traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices.

Candidate will install, modify, test, troubleshoot, and repair traffic control signals, communications, and ITS field devices. Other duties include repair of internal cabinet equipment, essential electrical devices, and ITS equipment. The position will ship, order, receive, and inventory equipment. Essential duties include rotational on‑call responsibilities, responding to emergency situations, and reporting to the duty station within 60 minutes. Candidates must follow applicable safety procedures, use equipment such as bucket trucks, locating equipment, and electrical test equipment, and be physically able to lift materials such as pedestrian signal poles and other traffic equipment.

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of intelligent transportation systems equipment.
• Repair copper‑wired, fiber‑optic, and wireless communication systems related to ITS equipment.
• Test ITS equipment using detection software and a variety of testing devices such as multimeters, meggars, GPS equipment, and oscilloscopes.
• Interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for the purpose of diagnosing ITS equipment.
• Apply the standards, principles, and practices of the department safety manual, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the National Electrical Code.
• Respond to emergencies involving ITS equipment.
• Transfer data to and from field unit devices such as traffic signal controllers, piezoelectric axle sensors, and automatic data recorders into a computer database.
• Detect, locate, and mark out underground utilities.
• Perform field counts for traffic control and timing.
• Operate motorized equipment such as an aerial lift device with extended arm for repairing and replacing ITS equipment.

• Knowledge of electronics or electrical installation.
• Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled).

• Legally authorized to work in the United States; participation in E‑Verify.
• Position is classified under an exclusive bargaining representative.
• Pre‑employment drug testing and a satisfactory criminal background check are required.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled).
• All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation on their first day of employment.
