Introduction

Summary StatementThis is a mechanical position at the expert level required to conduct or oversee maintenance, troubleshooting, fabrication, repair, rebuild, modify, and install major systems on light and heavy‑duty vehicles, construction equipment, watercraft, and all‑terrain equipment. Incumbents provide advanced training and supervision to lower‑level mechanics, and recommend repair or replacement of components. The position must be available to work overtime for storm events and other emergencies on short notice, sometimes with no advance notice.
EssentialFunctions
- Perform preventive maintenance (lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, and testing equipment).
- Use manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, make adjustments, and diagnose equipment malfunctions or defects.
- Repair or replace various parts and assemblies using mechanic power and hand tools.
- Interpret schematics and blueprints to perform inspections, diagnoses, wiring procedures, and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, ignition, lighting, warning, and injection assemblies and component systems.
- Operate computers, interpret parts, service, and automated equipment management system manuals to perform research, order parts, prepare records, and analyze equipment malfunctions.
- Fabricate parts, perform gas/electric welding, and make body repairs.
- Respond to road service requests and assist with tow trucks/wreckers.
- Conduct road test and operational checks for diagnostic purposes to determine equipment deficiencies and for post‑maintenance tests.
- Cleans and cares for tools, equipment, and shop facilities.
- Follow safety rules and practices, and comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.
- Three years of experience diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, and calibrating light and heavy‑duty engines, power trains, stabilizing mechanisms, and related equipment requiring multiple integrated calibrations.
- Three years of experience in gas and electric welding.
- Three years of experience machining or milling parts to comply with manufacturer specifications.
- Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through coursework, academic training, employer training, or experience as a lead worker overseeing the work of others, including planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others, or supervising through subordinate supervisors.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled).
Must possess a valid CDL Class A or B driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled) or obtain one within the initial 90‑day probationary period. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
DelDOT medical exam:
Applicants who meet the job requirements and receive a conditional offer of employment shall meet the physical qualifications and examination requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations to hold a commercial driver’s license unless approved for an intra‑state CDL waiver or exemption.
Applicants must not have incurred four or more serious traffic violations during the previous three years as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Code. The Department of Transportation will obtain driving record information maintained by the Division of Motor Vehicles for the preceding three‑year period.
