Position Overview
BWC’s core hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, although start and end times may vary based on operational need. Most positions perform work on-site at one of BWC’s seven offices across the state. BWC offers flex‑time schedules that allow an employee to start as early as 7:00 am or as late as 8:30 am. Flex‑time schedules require supervisor approval and are based on operational need.
The reporting location will be determined based on the final candidate recommended for the position.
- Supervises personnel at Special Investigations service offices in Cleveland, Youngstown, and Canton in case management and management of medical and disability claims suspected of fraud.
- Monitors and reviews reports of investigation and the preparation and presentation of exhibits and evidence for criminal, civil, and arbitration/labor hearings to ensure appropriateness and accuracy.
- Develops and recommends BWC policies and procedures designed to identify and deter fraudulent activity within BWC and among outside sources such as injured workers, employers, and providers.
- Oversees investigative field operations and ensures compliance with the law.
- Acts as a liaison for the agency by preparing speeches and speaking at public forums about BWC Special Investigations.
- 3 years of investigative training or experience with experience corresponding to insurance fraud; 2 years of training or experience in a supervisory position associated with criminal investigation of insurance claims or an insurance fraud department; valid Ohio driver’s license.
- Or 4 years of investigative training or experience where experience does not correspond to insurance fraud; 2 years of training or experience in supervisory principles or techniques; valid Ohio driver’s license.
- Or 3 years as a BWC Fraud Investigator (classification 26261) or in a comparable position, or as a BWC Fraud Analyst (classification 26262) or in a comparable position, or any combination of previously named classifications or positions totaling 3 years of experience; valid Ohio driver’s license.
- Or equivalent of the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
- Investigation

- Employee training and development; management principles and techniques
- Rules of evidence;
Fraud Division investigation policies, procedures and techniques - Labor relations; supervisory principles and techniques; interviewing
- Use of PC
- Operation of motor vehicle
- Define problems; collect data, establish facts and draw complex conclusions about existence of fraud
- Read and understand medical reference manuals
- Write meaningful, accurate reports and gather, collate, and classify information about data, people, or things
- Respond to sensitive inquiries from and contacts with injured workers, employers, providers, public officials, law enforcement agencies, and other state agencies
- Establish a friendly atmosphere as a supervisor of a department
