Staff Writer

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Media Communications & Relations, the Staff Writer will produce high-quality written content that communicates the University of Georgia’s achievements and impact across print and digital platforms. Responsibilities include writing news stories, features, profiles, and narrative content for a wide range of audiences, collaborating with internal stakeholders, and ensuring adherence to journalistic standards and AP Style.

Qualifications
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, public relations, or a related field.
  • One to three years of professional writing, journalism, or communications experience.
  • Experience writing news stories, features, profiles, or narrative content for print or digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with higher education environments and ability to translate complex topics into engaging stories.
  • Ability to adapt writing style and tone for different audiences and platforms.
  • Familiarity with AP Style and standard journalistic editing practices.
  • Experience with content management systems or web publishing tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
Responsibilities

Content Development & Storytelling
: 65%

  • Research, interview, and write news, feature stories, profiles, and narrative content reflecting UGA’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Produce executive-level messaging, institutional announcements, and general assignment stories for multiple platforms.
  • Lead narrative creation for flagship institutional stories, major research features, and special publications.
  • Identify, develop, and lead complex storytelling projects with minimal oversight.
  • Develop narrative strategy for major communications initiatives.

Editing & Quality Assurance
: 15%

  • Support Managing Editor by editing and refining colleague and partner content.
  • Maintain overall quality and integrity of published content.
  • Provide guidance on narrative development, messaging approaches, and best practices.

Content Planning & Story Development
: 10%

  • Identify and pitch story ideas aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across units to discover compelling stories.
  • Create long-form and multimedia-supported content requiring originality and critical thinking.

UGA Today Website and Email
: 5%

  • Serve as backup for UGA Today email newsletter production and distribution, and website content publication and organization management.

Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

Work in a standard office environment. No driving responsibilities. No direct interaction with children under 18 or medical duties. No security access requirements.

Background Investigation
