Paint Project Engineer
Job Description
The Paint Project Engineer leads capital and process improvement projects within automotive paint operations, from feasibility study through installation and commissioning. This role evaluates project scope, schedule, and budget, develops detailed technical specifications, and coordinates cross-functional teams to deliver safe, high-quality, and cost-effective solutions. The engineer manages multiple concurrent projects in a manufacturing environment, ensuring alignment with operational goals and long-term facility plans.
Responsibilities
+ Investigate project feasibility by assessing technical requirements, operational constraints, and alignment with production and paint process needs.
+ Define and document project scope, schedule, and budget, ensuring clarity on deliverables, milestones, and resource requirements.
+ Create detailed scopes of work, bid packages, and project specifications for equipment suppliers, contractors, and service providers.
+ Procure equipment and materials, coordinate with vendors, and track purchase orders to align with project timelines and budgets.
+ Monitor and track project budgets and milestones, identifying variances and implementing corrective actions to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
+ Supervise contractors in a field work environment, ensuring adherence to safety standards, technical specifications, and quality expectations.
+ Coordinate project installation activities with skilled trades, affiliate companies, engineers, and equipment suppliers to ensure smooth execution and minimal disruption to operations.
+ Develop and implement countermeasures for project delays, proactively resolving issues to achieve timely project completion.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, construction, and operations, to ensure project designs meet manufacturing and paint process requirements.
+ Utilize engineering tools and AutoCAD to support mechanical and layout design, equipment placement, and integration within existing facilities.
+ Support construction management activities, including scheduling, field coordination, and progress reporting for paint-related projects.
+ Contribute to project documentation, including drawings, reports, and as-built records, to support future maintenance and continuous improvement.
+ Work on multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
+ Apply project management methodologies to plan, execute, monitor, and close projects in a structured and disciplined manner.
+ Support cost analysis and cost-saving initiatives by evaluating equipment options and process changes that improve efficiency and reduce resource usage.
+ Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure compliance with applicable safety, engineering, and construction standards.
Essential Skills
+ Technical Trader Certification or equivalent engineering or technical experience.
+ At least 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
+ At least 3 years of project management experience, preferably in engineering, construction, or industrial projects.
+ Strong background in mechanical engineering, project engineering, or a closely related discipline.
+ Hands-on experience with project management in construction or industrial environments.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office software for project tracking, reporting, and documentation.
+ Proficiency with AutoCAD for mechanical design, layout, and project coordination.
+ Demonstrated ability to create scopes of work, bid packages, and project specifications.
+ Experience coordinating with contractors, skilled trades, and engineering teams in a field work environment.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
+ Strong communication and coordination skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
+ Ability to develop and implement countermeasures to address project delays and issues.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+
Experience with automotive paint processes or paint shop projects.
+ Toyota project management experience or familiarity with similar automotive manufacturing environments.
+ background in conveyor installation or design, especially in paint or material handling systems.
+ Ability to understand and calculate cost savings from new equipment, including reductions in utility usage such as electricity, natural gas, and water.
+ Experience in construction management or project coordination within industrial facilities.
+ Knowledge of engineering standards and best practices related to mechanical and construction projects.
+ OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.
+ Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 10%, including international travel to Canada and Mexico.
