DATCP currently has an opening for a Dog Seller Inspector (Companion Animal Inspector
- Objective) position within the Division of Animal Health in the Bureau of Field Services.
This is a field‑based position and routine statewide travel is required. The selected applicant can select a headquarters in one of the following counties:
Marathon, Portage, and Wood County. Qualifying candidates are not required to live in a county headquarter location. However, reimbursement for commuting to or from the employee’s assigned headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.). Routine travel within an assigned territory and throughout the state for assigned work and emergency response is required.

Position SummaryThis position is responsible for the enforcement of animal health laws, regulations, and standards. For an assigned geographic area of the state, the position spends the majority of its time inspecting records, animal facilities and equipment for compliance with animal health laws, rules, and regulations. Through routine activities, the position will educate owners, dealers, markets, etc. and seek voluntary compliance with animal health rules.
The position also investigates complaints or violations of animal health rules, and identifies entities engaged in unlicensed activities. The position will also issue and document verbal and written warnings as well as make recommendations for prosecution of animal health rule violations, issue quarantines, refer cases for further compliance actions, assist with disease investigation, testing, sampling, epidemiology, and trace animal movement.
The position will also be responsible for basic maintenance and transportation of equipment as needed.
The entry‑level Companion Animal Inspector – Obj is in schedule‑range 05‑14 and starting pay is $27.62 per hour. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12‑month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.

These OJT opportunities include direct experience and practice through collaboration with co‑workers/supervisor, peer mentoring, and job‑specific training modules. OJT for our Animal Health Inspectors includes:
Humane Officer Training, job shadowing and on the job shadowing, program guide, policy and administrative code review.
