Chief Building Official

Location:

Perry, Georgia.

The City Building Official serves as the City’s chief building official, responsible for administering and enforcing the City of Perry and State of Georgia building codes governing construction, use, and occupancy of buildings and structures.

This position directs the Building Codes Division within the Department of Community Development and oversees inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and other structures during and after construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

The position also performs related administrative, supervisory, and technical duties as required.

This role balances regulatory compliance with customer‑focused service, providing operational oversight to ensure compliance with adopted building standards while supporting the City’s long‑term development goals and facilitating responsible growth and redevelopment throughout the city.

The Building Official works collaboratively across departments and with community stakeholders to improve operational efficiency, support adaptive reuse and urban development projects, and maintain the city’s high standards for safety, sustainability, and quality development.

Together with a team, it conducts reviews, inspections, and code enforcement to support safe, efficient, and high‑quality development in the community.

The Ideal Candidate
  • Directs and supports high‑performing teams while fostering collaboration across departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Under the direction of the Community Development Director, works closely with city officials, developers, contractors, and the public to support development initiatives and maintain strong community relationships.
  • Provides expertise in building code administration, permitting, plan review, inspections, and urban development practices.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, public engagement, and customer service skills.
  • Maintains technical expertise in Georgia Building Standards, permitting software, and regulatory compliance.
  • Supports permitting system enhancements and process improvements to streamline plan review and operational efficiency.
  • Assists with adaptive reuse, redevelopment, and other complex urban development projects.
  • Applies strategic thinking and project management skills to support continuous improvement and organizational goals.

Pay: $80,546 – $123,600 (based on experience).
