About the Role

Kenton County (Covington), KY—part of Greater Cincinnati—seeks a talented planning professional with a strong service delivery background to lead its Planning and Development Services (PDS) agency.

The County and its municipalities have had a single city-county planning staff and planning commission since 1961 and 1966 respectively. PDS has 47 permanent full- and part-time employees, including a strong leadership team of department directors. The agency’s FY20 adopted budget is $5.8M, including over $1M in service and user fees. The executive director reports to a seven-member board of elected city and county officials.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in urban / community planning or closely related field; a master’s degree is highly desirable. AICP certification is required. In addition, he/she must have seven to ten years of increasingly responsible experience in the administration of land use planning, inspection services, or directly related field. Demonstrated management and administrative leadership skills are extremely important as well as the ability to work collaboratively with elected and appointed officials, staff, members of boards and commissions, and an active, engaged citizenry.

The successful candidate will display the ability to serve as both regulator and facilitator of quality development; the ability to translate complex planning and land use issues for varied stakeholders and decision makers; and, a strong desire to work in a well-established collaborative planning environment.

Salary: $120K-140K +/- DOQ; a comprehensive benefits package is included. The successful candidate must pass a post-offer drug screen. Expected start date is June 1, 2020. The position will remain open until filled.
