Job Description

The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) is an individual with lived experience of mental health and/or substance use recovery who is trained and certified to provide peer support services. The CPS uses personal recovery experience to support individuals in achieving their recovery goals through advocacy, mentoring, education, and empowerment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide peer-based recovery support services to individuals receiving behavioral health treatment.
  • Share lived experience appropriately to inspire hope and model recovery.
  • Assist individuals in developing recovery goals and action plans.
  • Support individuals in accessing community resources, including housing, employment, education, healthcare, and social supports.
  • Facilitate peer support groups and recovery-focused activities.
  • Provide advocacy and empowerment support.
  • Assist individuals in crisis prevention and self-advocacy skills.
  • Document services in the electronic health record (EHR) in compliance with agency, state, and payer requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
  • Support engagement and retention in services.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
