Job Description & How to Apply Below

Northfork Local Food is a decade old community nonprofit working to strengthen the local food system in remote Southeast Kentucky. Founded to connect farmers, producers, and consumers, we support a region transitioning from a coal based economy toward one rooted in agriculture, land stewardship, and agritourism. Our work helps reclaim Appalachian farming heritage while expanding access to healthy, locally sourced food.

Located in the heart of the Appalachian coalfields, our community is resilient, culturally rich, and surrounded by forests, mountains, and small towns where relationships matter.

A Stewards VISTA member will help us build long term organizational capacity as we shift from a volunteer run model to one supported by full time staff. Members will develop resources for staff to cultivate partnerships, strengthen regional coalitions, support community education, uplift local foodways and cultural traditions, and develop systems for fund development and resource sharing. Ideal candidates are collaborative, curious, organized, and passionate about food systems, rural communities, and equity.

This project runs from September 2026 to September 2027. Candidates moving from outside the area will find a welcoming, tight knit community with a low cost of living, abundant outdoor recreation, and a strong sense of place.

Member Duties

Build out internal nonprofit infrastructure through strategic planning; research and develop funding proposals (public & private); develop toolkits for staff to engage in coalition building. Most of all, be a part of our community with a passion for food, environment, and good health.
