Position SummaryThe SMT Supplier Quality Engineer (IQC/SQE) is responsible for ensuring the quality, reliability, and compliance of supplier-provided materials used in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) manufacturing. This role oversees supplier qualification, incoming quality control (IQC), supplier audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure components meet customer, regulatory, and company quality standards.
Working closely with Procurement, Manufacturing, Engineering, and suppliers, the SMT Supplier Quality Engineer drives supplier performance, resolves quality issues through structured root cause analysis, supports New Product Introduction (NPI), and helps maintain a high-performing supply chain in a fast-paced electronics manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate, qualify, and audit suppliers to ensure compliance with quality standards and customer requirements.
- Develop and maintain incoming inspection standards for PCBs, electronic components, and mechanical parts.
- Investigate incoming material quality issues and lead supplier corrective actions (SCARs) using 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone, and CAPA methodologies.
- Monitor supplier performance through quality metrics, scorecards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support incoming quality inspections and disposition of non-conforming materials.
- Partner with Procurement, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality teams to resolve supplier-related issues and improve material quality.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities, supplier qualification, and Engineering Change Orders (ECO/ECN).
- Maintain supplier quality documentation, audit reports, inspection records, and quality metrics.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, IPC standards, customer specifications, and internal Quality Management System (QMS) requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement projects focused on supplier quality, process capability, and defect prevention.
- Bachelor's degree in Quality Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 3+ years of Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) or Incoming Quality Control (IQC) experience in SMT, PCBA, EMS, or electronics manufacturing.
- Experience working with PCB manufacturers, electronic component suppliers, or contract manufacturers.
- Strong knowledge of supplier audits, supplier qualification, incoming inspection, and supplier performance management.
- Experience with root cause analysis methodologies, including 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone, CAPA, PFMEA, and SPC
. - Working knowledge of ISO 9001
, Quality Management Systems (QMS), and Lean Manufacturing principles. - Familiarity with IPC-A-610
, IPC-J-STD-001
, and electronics manufacturing quality standards is preferred. - Proficiency with ERP systems (SAP preferred), MES, Microsoft Excel, and quality reporting tools.
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Six Sigma Green Belt, or related quality certification is preferred.
- Excellent analytical, communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
