Job Overview
An Electrical Lineman performs journey‑level tasks in the repair, installation, and maintenance of electrical service lines. Responsibilities include outdoor tasks on both overhead and underground systems, operation of heavy machinery, and leadership as a mentor in the Apprentice Line Technician program.
Key Responsibilities- Perform daily line construction activities for overhead and underground installations on energized lines using aerial buckets and pole climbs.
- Assemble transformers, switches, pad‑mounted facilities, metering, street lighting, capacitors, and circuit switching and protection installations.
- Mentor apprentice line technicians as part of the training program.
- Operate heavy machinery for digging, setting, tamping poles, pulling conductors, back filling trenches, and executing hurt‑man rescue via aerial buckets and poles.
- Use hand tools (snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc.) and assemble/disassemble hardware for installations in energized environments.
- Maintain electronic test equipment, troubleshoot, repair, and resolve unplanned power outages.
- Communicate with utility customers regarding complaints, planned outages, and hazards during power outages.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Four (4) years of full‑time related experience as an electrical lineman or a validated training program.
- Journeyman Electric Lineman must have completed 8000 hours of textbook training and four years of on‑job training with the City of Georgetown’s Line Technician Training Program, verified by mentor and program administrator.
- Preferable completion of a utility lineman certificate program or a 2‑year associate of applied science in utility lineman or electric power technology.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Valid Class “A” CDL, Texas driver’s license.
- Valid City Apprentice Line Technician certification or an accredited alternate.
- Complete City‑designated training in substation operations and SEL relay controls within the first 12 months of employment.
- Completion of this training is a mandatory condition of continued employment; failure may result in disciplinary action.
- Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching, bending; fine‑dexterity tasks.
- Exposure to temperature extremes, loud noise, live electric lines, creosote burns, confined spaces, poison oak/ivy/sumac, dogs, and insects.
Hourly pay ranges from $42.09 to $55.36 for Journeyman entry to mid level.
