• Operates equipment and performs manufacturer’s preventative maintenance on substation power transformers, such as IFT testing and oil testing, and interprets results. In addition, checks fittings, gauges, fans, and connections for looseness, leaks or damage; maintains the load tap changers and assists with rebuilds or maintenance as required.
• Inspects switches, breakers, bushings, and bus work for proper adjustment, contamination, chips, cracks, or other damage.
• Performs manufacturer’s preventative maintenance on 15/25KV switch gear breakers and pad‑mounted switches and interrupters.
• Performs monthly inspections of substation equipment in hardcopy and/or computer database formats.
• Maintains substation and UPS batteries, performing resistance testing, cell‑voltage testing, specific‑gravity testing, cleaning, and replacement of parts.
• Performs T&D switching duties for both the substation 138KV system and the 15/25KV distribution system.
• Maintains and troubleshoots the fiber and radio communication system for the electric system operation from the substation level to the SCADA master and the component level.
• Performs infrared testing for all substation equipment and major distribution equipment, and implements corrective action as required.
• Responds to transmission and distribution system outages.
• Works with I&C technician on relays, fiber and testing; works with SCADA technician on relay and control system and associated wiring.
• Consults with and advises the Substation T&D manager on matters related to the maintenance or upgrading of the metering system, protective relays, mobile equipment, substation equipment, tools, computer, and communications systems.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Associates degree in electrical technology plus a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the installation and modification of electrical and mechanical equipment in a substation environment using appropriate basic and specialized tools. Three (3) years’ experience in relaying and control, electronics, and electrical testing preferred. Experience in relaying, electronics, revenue metering, load management, radio and communications testing. OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Knowledge of:
  • Ability to analyze electrical control schemes and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, diagrams, and manufacturer’s instruction books.
  • High level of skill and knowledge in electrical theory, operation, and testing.
  • Good working knowledge of a personal computer.
  • Relaying, electronics, revenue metering, load management, radio and communications testing (or combination).
  • Substation insulating materials and the equipment used in testing and maintaining them.
  • The principles of operation of substation equipment.
• Skills in:
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Using a personal computer and various software programs.
  • Creating and maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Applying mathematics, electrical theory, mechanical functionality.
  • Carrying out oral or written instructions.
  • Addressing problems involving several concrete variables.
  • Reading company manuals and reports, workplace rules and procedures.
  • Interpreting construction drawings, diagrams, and manufacturer’s instruction books.
• Valid Class C Texas driver’s license required. Out‑of‑state license holders must have a valid license and provide a three‑year driving history.

Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Work is performed in the field in possible inclement weather conditions. This position will involve some periods of computer monitor screening. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle or use objects, tools, or controls.
