Mechanic, Senior Mechanic or Master Mechanic

Overview

Maintains and repairs City vehicles and equipment to keep them in good working condition. Responsibilities include identifying repair methods, diagnosing conditions, and performing maintenance on mechanical and automotive equipment.

These duties are representative and may be assigned beyond the listed responsibilities. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Identify the appropriate and most cost-efficient repair method and inspect and diagnose the condition of vehicles.
• Transport vehicles of all types including heavy vehicles.
• Order parts; pick up parts.
• Perform troubleshooting in the field on emergency breakdowns to minimize vehicle and customer downtime.
• Perform brazing/cutting with torch and welding as required on vehicles to minimize repair costs.
• Perform yearly state inspections in City vehicles and execute necessary repairs to ensure a safe and efficient fleet.
• Document work in writing to maintain a maintenance/repair history of all active vehicles.
• Keep tools, equipment and the work area clean and orderly to ensure safety.
• Perform all job duties according to approved safety rules and procedures.
• Report or correct unsafe practices or conditions observed to the immediate supervisor.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Test-drive vehicles to identify problems and verify repairs.
• Operate equipment to identify problems and verify repairs.
• Inspect and diagnose the condition of vehicles; identify the appropriate and most cost-efficient repair method.
• Perform troubleshooting on emergency breakdowns in the field to minimize downtime.
• Perform yearly state inspections and necessary repairs for fleet safety and efficiency.
• Perform brazing/cutting and welding as part of repairs to minimize costs.
• Document work to maintain a maintenance/repair history of all active vehicles.
• Keep tools, equipment and the work area clean and orderly for safety.
• Follow safety rules and procedures and report unsafe conditions to the immediate supervisor.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Perform specialized work and repairs on engines, carburetors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and other complex components.
• Disassemble, repair, service, reassemble and reinstall vehicle accessories and systems including brakes, transmissions, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, cooling and radiator, air conditioning, suspension, generators, carburetors and fuel injection, starters and pumps.
• Repair heavy equipment serviced by the city service center.
• Operate acetylene torch and welding machines for equipment repair.
• Perform yearly state inspections and necessary repairs to ensure a safe fleet.
• Test-drive vehicles to identify problems and verify repairs.
• Design, engineer and fabricate attachments and accessories for departments.
• Document work to maintain a maintenance/repair history of all active vehicles.
• Keep tools, equipment and the work area clean and orderly for safety.
• Follow safety rules and procedures and report unsafe conditions to the immediate supervisor.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Mechanic

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High school graduate, or its equivalent, plus at least four (4) years of experience in general vehicle or equipment maintenance and repair, including one (1) year in a specialized area. OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, equipment and materials used in servicing automobiles and other applicable equipment.
• Fleet operations and services.
• Specialized diagnostic testing and analysis tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
• Applicable Federal, State and Local laws.
• City practice, policy and procedures.

Skill in:

• Operating heavy equipment.
• Diagnosing problems and performing major and minor mechanical repairs.
• Using a variety of hand power tools.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
• Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Using computers and related software.
• Reading and comprehending technical manuals.
• Following oral and written instructions.
• Performing applicable calculations.
• Evaluating conditions of vehicles and equipment to determine the most feasible and appropriate major repair.

Senior Mechanic

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or equivalent. Five (5) years of full-time experience in general vehicle or equipment maintenance and repair, including at least one (1) year in a specialized area; preferably John Deere. OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge of:

• Specialized repairs to vehicle, equipment and fire apparatus.
• Methods, equipment and materials used in servicing automobiles and other applicable equipment.
