The Speechwriter and Researcher is responsible for researching, analyzing, and interpreting information; writing and editing; and serving as a point of contact on projects for the department. The ideal candidate is an exceptionally creative communicator who has excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; an observer with keen attention to detail; flexible, open-minded, and willing to adapt to changing or competing priorities;
able to manage multiple demands; and someone who enjoys learning and continually seeking new ways to grow personally and professionally. The Speechwriter and Researcher is expected to adhere to the organization's style guide, proofread assignments to correct errors before submission, and revise work based on editorial feedback.
- Converting information gathered into readable, easy-to-understand content tailored to specific audience
- Tailoring writing style for speeches and presentations in the speaker's voice while maintaining the County's brand standards and tone
- Collaborating with a team of public relations professionals to ensure understanding and execution of communications needs and requirements, particularly as it relates to content development
- Researching speaking engagement opportunities by connecting with event organizers to understand speaking requests
- Organizing writing schedules to complete drafts or finished projects within deadlines
- Pitching new content ideas that further the organization's objectives
- Carrying out research and fact checking the data collected
- Providing guidance or facilitates training that supports public speaking standards and development across the organization
- Producing well-researched, original content for speeches, newsletters, presentations, and digital platforms
- Performing additional duties, as assigned
- Leading meetings with executive leadership and providing coaching and feedback to develop and improve speaker profiles
- Explaining job duties to youth and adults during outreach programming
Job Requirements /Information
- This job will require working extended hours, including weekends and evenings, as needed to support the Communications Department's programs and services.
The grade for this position is 103.
Minimum qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or English
- Three years of relevant experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform essential duties such as those listed above will also be considered
- Experience interacting with executive-level leadership
