Middle School Art Teacher (Grades 6-8)
Reports to:
Principal / Assistant Principal
Workdays: 190
Position Summary
The Middle School Art Teacher provides engaging, standards-based visual arts instruction to students in grades 6-8. The teacher fosters creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression while supporting the social, emotional, and academic development of early adolescent learners. The position supports the school's mission and vision and aligns with Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for Visual Arts.
Education
Bachelor's Degree required (Master's degree preferred)
Certification
Must hold or be eligible for a Georgia Professional Teaching Certificate in Art (P-12 or Middle Grades Art)
Experience
* Prior middle school teaching experience preferred
* Experience working with diverse student populations
Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions
* Knowledge of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Visual Arts
* Understanding of adolescent development and middle school instructional practices
* Ability to deliver differentiated instruction for diverse learners
* Effective classroom management and positive behavior support strategies
* Strong communication and collaboration skills
* Ability to integrate art history, art criticism, and art production
* Proficiency in a variety of media (drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, digital art, etc.)
* Commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment
Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum
* Plan and deliver engaging visual arts instruction aligned with Georgia Standards of Excellence
* Develop lesson plans that incorporate creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving
* Differentiate instruction to meet the academic and developmental needs of all students
* Integrate literacy, math, and technology where appropriate
* Incorporate art history, cultural awareness, and contemporary art practices
Assessment and Student Growth
* Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress
* Provide timely and meaningful feedback to students
* Maintain accurate records of student performance and growth
Classroom Environment and Management
* Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and positive classroom environment
* Implement effective classroom management strategies consistent with school expectations
* Ensure proper use, care, and storage of art supplies and equipment
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
* Collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, and instructional coaches
* Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress
* Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), and professional development
* Support school-wide initiatives, events, and interdisciplinary projects
Ethics and Professionalism
* Adhere to the Georgia Code of Ethics for Educators
* Maintain confidentiality of student and school information
* Model professionalism in appearance, communication, and conduct
Additional Responsibilities
* Supervise students during assigned duties
* Participate in school events such as exhibitions, performances, and showcases
* Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
