Primary Function
The School Counselor provides a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program that addresses the academic achievement, career development, and social-emotional growth of all students. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders to remove barriers to learning, promote student success, and prepare students for high school, post-secondary opportunities, careers, and responsible citizenship.
Qualifications Profile
Certification/License
* Valid Georgia Professional Certificate in School Counseling (P-12) or eligibility for certification.
Education
A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in Guidance and Counseling, Social Work, Education, or related field.
Master's degree or higher in School Counseling from an accredited college or university preferred.
Experience
* Knowledge of middle grades student development, including academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and career development needs.
* Ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community partners.
* Strong communication, collaboration, and conflict-resolution skills.
* Experience working within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework preferred.
* Experience in education or counseling settings preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Development
* Assist students in developing academic skills, goal-setting strategies, organizational skills, and positive learning habits.
* Analyze student performance, attendance, and behavioral data to identify barriers to achievement and implement appropriate interventions.
* Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support personnel to improve student outcomes.
* Participate in Student Support Team (SST), MTSS, Section 504, and other student support processes as appropriate.
Career Development
* Facilitate career awareness, exploration, and planning activities aligned with Georgia's College and Career Ready initiatives.
* Assist students in developing Individual Graduation Plans (IGPs) and preparing for successful transitions to high school.
* Coordinate activities that promote college and career readiness, workforce awareness, and postsecondary planning.
Social-Emotional Development
* Provide short-term individual counseling and small-group counseling focused on student success and social-emotional growth.
* Deliver classroom guidance lessons aligned with the school counseling curriculum and identified student needs.
* Support students in developing interpersonal skills, self-management skills, decision-making abilities, and responsible behaviors.
* Assist with crisis prevention, intervention, and response in accordance with district procedures.
Consultation, Collaboration, and Coordination
* Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies regarding student needs and available resources.
* Coordinate referrals to appropriate school and community-based support services.
* Facilitate parent conferences and collaborative problem-solving meetings when needed.
* Promote family engagement and provide resources that support student success.
Program Management
* Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model and Georgia Department of Education guidelines.
* Use data to assess program effectiveness and guide continuous improvement efforts.
* Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations.
* Assist with school-wide initiatives that support positive school climate, attendance improvement, bullying prevention, and student wellness.
* Participate in professional learning opportunities and maintain professional growth consistent with certification requirements.
Additional Duties
* Participate in school committees, leadership teams, and district initiatives as assigned.
* Assist with student orientation, transition programs, recognition programs, and other student-centered activities.
