Job DescriptionThe job of Media Specialist is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information; maintain the library collection at the school site by implementing age‑appropriate programs for students using library resources; select appropriate items in support of classroom instruction; and instruct students in ways that stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas.
- Conduct classes in a variety of formats to promote the use and enjoyment of literature.
- Coordinate media equipment requests of individuals to ensure availability of audio‑visual/media equipment for instructional use.
- Distribute books, periodicals and other related media to provide requested print and non‑print information for student and classroom use.
- Instruct students on proper use of library resources and provide opportunities for them to learn to utilize and enjoy materials in all formats.
- Maintain the library in a neat and orderly fashion to ensure efficient organization of the library/media center and related resources.
- Monitor students in the library to provide for their safety and welfare and to help them learn to understand and enjoy information in a variety of formats.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Perform minor repairs to media (print and non‑print) and related equipment as needed to ensure availability of books, periodicals, audio‑visual equipment, etc. in a timely and efficient manner.
- Plan collaboratively with teachers to integrate literature, resources and information‑literacy skills into the curriculum to design learning strategies that stimulate interest in using information and ideas.
- Promote library use related to a wide variety of events (e.g., curriculum integration, holidays, seasonal activities) to motivate students to feel comfortable with and use library/media center resources.
- Provide leadership in collaborative planning for school library/media center resources to ensure they meet the needs of students and staff and that they follow district curriculum guidelines.
- Supervise assigned library/media center staff (clerical, paraprofessional, volunteer and/or technical, etc.) to ensure staffing requirements are met and that staff are effectively trained.
- Select and order resources consistent with district policies and classroom needs (books, periodicals, films, etc.) to maintain and constantly improve the library collection.
- Incorporate STEM activities into the media center.
- Help create and maintain a learning organization for students and staff.
Qualifications: Appropriate certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The Gordon County School District reserves the right to accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.
Salary: State base pay plus local supplement based on years of experience and degree.
