What does a Regulatory and Compliance Sr. Engineer do at Rinnai?
The independently owns regulatory, standards, certification, and product approval risks for assigned products or laboratories. This role ensures changing requirements are understood, translated into engineering actions, supported by complete test evidence, and communicated through effective cross‑functional compliance processes.

- Interpret applicable DOE, ENERGY STAR, AHRI, CSA, UL, ANSI, EPA, NOx, air quality district, and product safety requirements for engineering and certification stakeholders.
- Develop certification plans, test evidence requirements, compliance checklists, risk assessments, and product approval review materials for assigned scope.
- Coordinate with certification bodies, third‑party labs, regulatory agencies, vendors, Rinnai Japan, engineering, lab, quality, manufacturing, and service teams to complete compliance deliverables.
- Review test data, standards interpretations, listing records, certification reports, and submittal packages for accuracy, completeness, and technical consistency.
- Monitor regulatory changes and assess impact to current products, development programs, lab scope, labeling, documentation, and market access requirements.
- Support technical design reviews and product hazard management by acting as a second set of eyes for compliance, safety, test evidence, and risk mitigation.
- Coach lower‑level engineers and specialists on certification documentation, standards interpretation, test planning, and compliance process discipline.
- Resolve complex compliance issues through data review, standards research, stakeholder alignment, and clear recommendations to leadership.
- Prepare clear status reports, risk summaries, certification trackers, and management updates related to regulatory and compliance activities.
- Ability to participate in relevant industry group standards committee and clearly report committee activities to the department.
Job Requirements:
Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline; master's degree is a plus where aligned to the role.
- 8+ years of related engineering experience with demonstrated independent ownership of complex systems, subsystems, or technical risks.
- Experience in regulatory, compliance, certification, standards, product safety, appliance testing, or engineering development in a regulated product environment.
- Working knowledge of DOE, ENERGY STAR, AHRI, CSA, UL, ANSI, EPA, NOx, air quality district, and product safety processes applicable to appliances or HVAC/water heating products.
- Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex compliance risks and guide design, testing, documentation, and certification activities.
- Strong documentation, data organization, technical writing, report review, and stakeholder communication skills.
- Ability to mentor others, support design reviews, and prioritize compliance work aligned to business objectives.
- Nice to have: committee participation, certification body relationship experience, international standards exposure, or product hazard management experience.
