The Fulton County Sheriff's Office is recruiting dedicated, courageous, and community‑mindful individuals to serve as Detention Officers – the backbone of our correctional system.

Responsibilities- Supervise and monitor inmate activities.
- Ensure inmate and facility safety and compliance.
- Conduct inspections, searches, and complete incident reports.
- Support rehabilitation and re‑entry efforts.
- Enforce all jail rules and regulations.
- Maintain safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates.
- Take custody of new arrivals and escort inmates within the facility.
- Explain jail rules, conduct property inventory, and secure personal property.
- Prepare in‑processing documentation and perform background and fingerprint investigations.
- Assign inmate housing and issue clothing, bedding, and hygiene items.
- Monitor inmate activities during meals, recreation, work details, religious services, and visitation.
- Control movements of inmates and manage inmate workers or trustees.
- Transport inmates to medical facilities and other locations as assigned.
- Respond to emergencies, fire drills, and use fire suppression equipment.
- Assist in controlling or restraining violent or unruly prisoners.
- Administer first aid or CPR when needed.
- Conduct releases, prepare out‑processing documentation, and run GCIC reports.
- Handle questions, complaints, and requests for information from inmates, the public, and professionals.
- Ensure inmates with special needs receive required care.
- Mediates disputes between inmates and staff.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education and training sessions.
- Process department documentation, including incident reports, roster sheets, and inventory lists.
- Operate and maintain law enforcement and office equipment.
- Communicate with supervisors and colleagues to coordinate work and resolve issues.

- Must complete and maintain Basic Jail Officer Certification, CPR, and First Aid.
- Must hold a valid Georgia driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a resident.
- Must meet physical fitness/ agility standards (running, sit‑ups, push‑ups).
- Must successfully complete psychological profile test if requested.
- Must be an U.S. citizen and have no disqualifying convictions.
- Must pass a licensed physician exam and a job‑related academy entrance examination.
The purpose of this classification is to provide and maintain security, safety, care, and control of inmates, the detention facility, and the facility equipment, and to supervise inmates in the County Jail, Jail Annexes, Grady Detention, and the Fulton County Courthouse.
Essential FunctionsEnforces all jail rules and regulations; maintains safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates; takes custody of new arrivals; escorts inmates to various parts of the jail facility.
Receives and processes incoming inmates: explains jail rules, conducts searches, inventory property, secures personal property, prepares in‑processing documentation, obtains background reports, conducts book‑in interviews, documents personal histories, and assigns appropriate classification and housing.
