Public Health Educator Responsibilities
The public health educator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating health education programs to determine impacts and outcomes. The incumbent conducts periodic community health assessments to identify health issues that need addressing, organizes community groups and volunteers to address health disparities among different groups, applies behavioral science principles to foster voluntary behavior change, advocates and promotes public health participation, and disseminates information on health problems, issues, and solutions.
The work may concentrate on one major health issue or several major issues and is performed under general supervision with leeway for independent judgment.
- A bachelor’s degree in health education, health science, public health, health promotion, community health, or health communications from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university; OR
- A bachelor’s degree in education, nursing, epidemiology, wellness and fitness, or nutrition from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university and one (1) year of experience in health education; OR
- A master’s degree in public health or health education from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university; OR
- A bachelor’s degree in marketing, human services, social work or psychology from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university and two (2) years of experience in health education.
A local public health educator must satisfactorily complete 15 hours of continuing education in health education related topics approved by the New York State Health Department within one year of appointment.
Salary2025 Salary: $70,275 (2026 Salary pending Union negotiation), Grade 17
