CNC Machinist – Cell Operations
This role focuses on maintaining high productivity and quality within a CNC machining cell by troubleshooting production issues, performing proven machine setups, and operating CNC mills and lathes as needed. You will work within established work instructions, SOPs, and safety procedures while actively contributing to continuous improvement in safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
Responsibilities
- Operate all machines and processes within the assigned cell proficiently, including CNC mills and lathes.
- Conform to and operate within all applicable operator work instructions, standard operating procedures, quality standards, and safety procedures.
- Maintain cell productivity by troubleshooting production problems and performing proven setups under the guidance of a Manufacturing Engineer and/or Supervisor.
- Operate machinery as necessary to meet production and quality requirements.
- Make tool offsets to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality specifications.
- Preset tools as needed and calibrate probes and tool setters to support accurate machining operations.
- Actively contribute to process improvement initiatives in assigned areas to enhance safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
- Inspect parts thoroughly after any tool or program change to verify conformance to specifications.
- Clear and correct common machine alarms, including Automatic Tool Changer alarms, to minimize downtime.
- Troubleshoot machine issues that affect part production or quality and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Assist and monitor process flow within the cell to meet production requirements set by the Cell Supervisor.
- Perform repetitive inspection of parts using precision instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, calipers, and indicators.
- Assist in training machine operators in the performance of their assigned duties, sharing best practices and safe work methods.
- Maintain proper housekeeping of the work area and keep all machines, tools, equipment, and work surfaces free of oil, grease, and debris.
- Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform job functions while working within established procedures under immediate supervision.
- Demonstrate commitment to and leadership of environmental health and safety principles, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to Safety, 6S, Quality, Delivery, and Productivity.
- Contribute to a positive work environment by supporting high integrity, safety, fair and equitable treatment, and teamwork.
- Perform other responsibilities as deemed appropriate or necessary by management.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Typically 2–4 years of prior CNC experience, or a combination of related experience, education, and/or training sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Proficiency in CNC machine operation, including mills and lathes.
- Hands-on experience with Fanuc controls and the ability to operate Fanuc-based CNC equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Proficient use of precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and indicators for part inspection.
- Working knowledge of metalworking tools, work holding, and common concepts, practices, and procedures within machining.
- Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Ability to interpret machine tool programming languages such as G and M codes to anticipate machine actions.
- Ability to use functions such as "Distance to Go," feed rate overrides, and spindle speed overrides for troubleshooting and changeovers.
- Capability to identify which tools create specific features in a given process and to diagnose visual or dimensional defects.
- Ability to properly assemble tooling for specific purposes and align center-cutting tools to part features.
- Understanding of the basics of work holding and tool clamping, including aligning work holding or adjusting work coordinates for proper machine function.
