Job Summary
Must have BLS, ACLS, and PALS. The RN Clinical Periop Nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers who ensure that patients, families, and significant others receive individualized high‑quality, safe patient care. They practice in a clinical environment administered by Nurse Managers and other leaders and are supported through the Well Star Shared Governance Model.
The framework for practice is steered by the Well Star Professional Practice Model, 5‑Star Nursing, and evidence‑based practice and research. RN competencies are derived from these models and supported by the Well Star Core Competencies. All RN Clinical Nurses are licensed, knowledgeable, and uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act. As a member of the patient services team, they uphold the voice of the patient, system policies, and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Perform the Nursing Process (assessment; diagnosis; identification of outcomes; planning; implementation and evaluation) in the performance of clinical care using evidence‑based practice, using analytical and critical thinking and ensuring that care is individualized.
- Coordinate care through effective partnerships; recognizing that caring is central to achieving optimal patient care outcomes.
- Provide relationship‑based patient‑centered care that is consistent with population‑specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender, disease) in a manner that adapts service delivery to reflect an understanding of cultural diversity.
- Always partner with the patient and significant others using appropriate methods for setting and purpose (e.g., bedside shift report, interdisciplinary rounds, just‑in‑time and planned patient teaching); keep the patient and significant others updated and make the patient's goals the focus of the plan of care.
- Practice using current clinical practice standards.
- Coordinate and document safe quality patient care that promotes the professional care delivery model; promote respectful, inclusive interdisciplinary communication methods (interdisciplinary rounds, case review, etc.).
- Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner and promoting recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members.
- Participate and support performance improvement inclusive of all stakeholders, research, and research utilization to promote safe, quality patient care including initiating and/or leading such activities.
- Participate in shared governance at all levels in the system.
- Complete all initial and ongoing professional competency assessment, required mandatory education, and population‑specific education.
- Serve as a preceptor and/or mentor for other professional nurses (and staff or students for all disciplines) to ensure a current and future qualified workforce; model the professional practice of nursing and create a healthy work environment.
- Promote evidence‑based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement in nursing; participate in value analysis and other decision‑making processes evaluating patient care products.
- Uphold all health care system/organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies as mandated by the job description and professional associations, including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements and standards such as TJC Patient Safety Goals and Well Star Health Systems safety absolutes.
- Participate in data collection and pose relevant clinical questions to advanced evidence‑based practice; consult appropriate experts and use appropriate resources and evidence to address practice questions.
- Proactively plan for the care of patients across the care continuum while providing direct patient care.
- Participate in the development of protocols and procedures when called upon or through self‑initiation in collaboration with care managers and other team members to achieve best practice outcomes (e.g., reduce re‑admission rates; avoidable days; adverse events).
- Support efficient and effective use of human and material resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all Well Star Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- Associates Nursing or Diploma (Nurse) Nursing (preferred Bachelor’s Nursing).
- RN – Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN‑COMPACT – RN – Multi‑state Compact.
- BLS – Basic Life Support or ARC‑BLS – American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS‑I – Basic Life Support – Instructor.
Minimum 5 years of direct patient care nursing experience.
