Job Description

The Georgia Department of Public Health invites a Registered Nurse to the Crawford County Health Department to support vital public health initiatives. The role involves direct patient care, case management, public education, and emergency preparedness, with a balance of clinic, home, and community settings.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care and case management under nurse protocols, policies, and procedures.
• Educate the public on health practices that promote wellness and prevention of illness, injury, and disability.
• Provide care for populations with special needs during disasters, emergencies, and in biological and chemical protocols.
• Offer services in clinics, homes, or community settings as deemed appropriate.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Demonstrate knowledge of and exercise good judgment in the execution of patient care protocols.
• Order and administer pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic treatments, medications, and vaccines in accordance with protocol.
• Order appropriate laboratory and diagnostic testing, interpret results, and direct treatment.
• Provide patient education and make appropriate referrals.
• Facilitate patient decision‑making by providing health education, counseling, and tools.
• Document medical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referrals, education, and consultations in the electronic medical record system.
• Perform women’s wellness services, contraceptive counseling, and contraceptives according to protocol.
• Enroll patients in the breast and cervical cancer program (BCCP).
• Screen and treat sexually transmitted diseases according to protocol.
• Administer tuberculosis testing, interpret results, and collaborate with the TB Program Coordinator for follow‑up and treatment.
• Provide child health, vision screening, and support other primary care services as needed.
• Perform onsite waived lab testing, wet preps, and participate in lab QA/QI.
• Provide referrals to programs and services within the Department of Public Health and other agencies for eligible infants, children, and adults.
• Consult and refer patients to physicians and other care providers as indicated.
• Promote public health in the community through education about resources and programs.
• Participate in meetings and contribute to district program goals and objectives as needed.
• Engage in peer review according to protocol requirements.
• Participate in emergency preparedness planning and response activities.
• Complete all initial and annual training to practice under nurse protocol.
• Perform inventory management, compile monthly reports, plan and/or implement community outreach activities, and other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university.
• One (1) year of nursing experience and completion of a PHN course within one year of hire.
• Current Georgia Registered Professional Nurse license and CPR certification; or one (1) year of experience at the lower‑level PH Registered Nurse 1 (HCP
  190) or equivalent position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
• Knowledge of Georgia DPH nurse protocols.
