Position: Preservation Maintenance Member - Jimmy Carter National Historical Park

Summary

Location: Jimmy Carter National Historic Park, Plains, GA

Position Overview

Maintain and preserve all park historic buildings and landscapes in accordance with NPS historical guidelines and Historic Structures Reports. Assist NPS Staff in the preservation and maintenance of park structures and assets as well as cultural and historic landscapes.

Duties
  • Cleaning and inspecting structures and landscapes.
  • Perform painting duties, basic carpentry duties, and general maintenance practices under NPS supervision.
  • Work alongside NPS Maintainers and Gardeners to preserve park historic structure assets.
  • Work with facilities team to support park maintenance operations (ensure visitor and administrative areas are clean and safe).
  • Provide support for grounds, custodial, and historic structure repairs (daily cleaning of buildings and restrooms; assist with structure repairs; garden with hand tools; maintain clean landscape).
Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm Eastern time. Possibility of weekend work during events and special scheduling circumstances.

Position Benefits
  • Living allowance: ~40 hours/week with a living allowance of $650/week (pre-tax) to offset costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
  • This position is part of the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority. PLC-eligible Members must meet PLC eligibility requirements. Upon completion of term and 640 hours of service, members may be eligible for federal hiring authority. If a PLC-eligible term is not long enough to accrue 640 hours, total hours may be combined with hours from another PLC-eligible term.
  • Housing:
    Housing is the member's responsibility; not provided by ACE or NPS.
  • Relocation Allowance: up to $605 in taxable reimbursement funds for eligible relocation expenses (details provided during interview).
  • Provided Training/Orientation:
    Position-specific training and orientation; may include mowing/string trimming, defensive driving, and UTV/Golf cart training.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Authorized to work in the United States; ACE does not sponsor visas.
  • Professional, positive representation of ACE and partner organization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record; must be 21+ to drive due to insurance requirements.
  • Willingness to undergo and pass criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform essential duties with or without accommodation.
  • Bi-weekly timesheets, term feedback forms, end-of-term evaluations (and mid-term evaluations for longer terms).
  • Compliance with the Member Service Agreement prohibitions.

Preferred:

  • High school diploma or current pursuit; relevant experience in biology, gardening, landscaping, or construction.
  • Laborer or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to multitask and adjust priorities; comfortable working outside in varying weather and heights.
  • Willingness to work hard and get dirty.
Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions
  • Physical Demands:
    Frequent standing, walking, carrying; use of hands; stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, crouching; manual dexterity for tools and computer use.
  • Vision Requirements:
    Close, distance, peripheral and depth perception; ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted:
    Frequently moves up to 20 lb; ability to move up to 50 lb.
  • Environment:
    Outdoor and indoor conditions; weather changes; various climates.
  • Noise:
    Moderate to high due to power tools.
  • Travel:
    Not required.
Environmental Conditions/Hazards

The ACE member may encounter extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Work duties should be performed safely to protect self, colleagues, and resources.
