Externship Overview
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some common elements: a supportive environment, commitment to excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.
Responsibilities- Gather patient histories
- Perform physical exams
- Create treatment plans
- Conduct diagnostics
- Provide dental services
- Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures
- Manage patients medically
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. They are designed for third and fourth year veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education.
StipendStudents in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For stipend amounts and details, please refer to the stipend program information.
