Shelter Veterinary Assistant

Lake Oconee Humane Society (LOHS) is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Veterinary Assistant to support the daily medical care of shelter animals and assist with high-quality veterinary services. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys hands-on animal care, and wants to make a direct impact in animal welfare every day.

• Assist veterinarians during exams, treatments, surgeries, and medical procedures
• Prepare treatment areas, surgical instruments, and medical supplies
• Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed
• Monitor animals before, during, and after procedures to ensure their safety and comfort
• Collect and process laboratory samples and maintain accurate medical records
• Educate adopters and clients on medications, recovery instructions, and ongoing care
• Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary treatment and kennel areas
• Assist with patient intake, restraint, handling, and daily monitoring of shelter animals
• Collaborate with staff and volunteers to support efficient shelter operations
• Help create a positive, compassionate experience for both animals and people

• Previous experience working with animals in a shelter, clinic, kennel, or similar environment preferred
• Basic understanding of animal handling and restraint techniques
• Willingness to learn veterinary procedures and shelter protocols
• Strong work ethic and ability to stay organized in a fast-paced environment
• Positive attitude with a team-oriented mindset
• Comfortable performing physical tasks, including lifting animals and standing for extended periods
• Compassionate, patient, and dependable
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
